There are many cheap imitations such as Ambroid, an immature variety of copal amber mixed with synthetic resin. True amber becomes electrically charged if rubbed with a wool cloth and will attract small particles.

Ancient Chinese believed Amber to be the solidified souls of deceased tigers. Alchemists thought that amber was rays of the sun, concealed in the sea and washed upon the shore in the form of stones.

The Navaho used turquoise in rain-brining rituals and ground it into paste for sand paintings. Turkish riders would wear a turquoise amulet believing this would protect them from falling from their horse. Tibetans used turquoise as currency.
Fading stone colour comes about from exposure to high temperatures, moisture and detergents but in some countries they believe this fading occurs when illness or danger is near or where friendship or love is fading.
